Тема интересная. Желания читать Джаффе и Куинна что-то у меня пока не возникло. Почитал ответы им разных математиков. А.С.Ш., как водится, дело говорит: не имеющий доказательства да назовет свое заявление претеоремой или как-нибудь в этом роде.
P.S. Прочитал все-таки Дж. и К. Смешной абзац:
For the most part the mainstream of mathematical physics has rejected purely theoretical work as a valid mathematical style. We observe, however, that the mathematicians involved in the ``new relations'' with physics are different from the traditional mathematical physicists. Geometers, topologists, and persons in representation theory have begun to talk with physicists. These mathematicians are unused to dealing with the difference in cultures and for the most part do not recognize parallels in their own collective experience that would sensitize them to the hazards of theoretical work. This suggests a question: As they gain more experience, will these mathematicians also reject pure theorizing?
