Он говорит, что достаточная часть обучения не об получении навыков, как обычно считается, а об том, чтобы показывать что человек умный, усердный и комформист. Люди чаще получают после образования хорошую работу не потому, что они чему-то научились, их научат на работе, а потому что образовательное учреждение подтвердило их качества.
Например при доступном образовании работы которые раньше его не требовали, сейчас его требуют. Там где нужен был бакалавр, сейчас хотят магистра или доктора. Потому что не получивший человек в среднем должен быть в важных вещах хуже, чем не получивший. Людям с высшим образованием предлагают больше денег даже там, куда можно пойти без него. Еще смешной момент состоит в так называемом sheepskin effect, когда люди закончившие последний год, получают за это куда более сильный бонус к зарплате, хотя маловероятно, что именно в этот год они что-то выучили.
