как известно, когда мой тезка-спартанский царь отправлялся оборонять некий проход или что-то такое против наступавших персов, взяв с собой 300 человек бойцов, ему говорили -- возьми хотя бы 3000, на что он отвечал -- чтобы победить, 3000 не хватит, а чтобы умереть, довольно и 300 -- так вот -

чтобы можно было жить, мне X (никакого реалистически просматривающегося X) не хватит. А умереть я и без этих понтов могу.

That is not what those people are saying. Indeed, your two descriptions of what they are saying contradict one another. There is no point in engaging in an unpleasant activity just to improve one's life a little, as being engaged in an unpleasant activity, by definition, worsens one's life.

What they are saying is that a particular unpleasant activity is somehow extraordinary important and my whole future singularly depends on me succeeding in this activity. This is a dangerous and irresponsible claim.

It also isn't true. My argument explains, why: as things look from the present, there will be no future, X or no X. With me, it is the general situation and has always been so, save some rare moments of illusory hopes. The future that comes, comes from unexpected directions.
