"Finished with the book, now refereeing a paper. The authors apparently do not know what a divergent spectral sequence is. Will have to explain it to them -- not a pleasant task. Perhaps one shouldn't throw cold water on the enthusiasms of young men, but sometimes one has to. Spent the day trying to come up with a particularly impressive counterexample."

There is no alternative to knowledge, to understanding. Care and caution are no good substitutes for lack of understanding. Some people do not know what a divergent spectral sequence is, other people do not know what a convergent spectral sequence is...
