posicLook, I am a mathematician. I know how research is being done. They will prove whatever gets their papers published, nothing more and nothing less. And if proving that 1=0 is what gets their papers published, they will prove convincingly that 1=0.
The day I stop hearing the "publish or perish" mantra and start hearing about people resigning from their secure tenured positions and leaving academia (or committing suicide, etc.) after their key research findings have been disproved, I will start thinking about perhaps taking some "research" seriously.
