Jeffrey Schaler.
Scapegoat as drug and drug as scapegoat
When the ancients saw a scapegoat, they could at least recognize him for what he was: a pharmakos, a human sacrifice. When modern man sees one, he does not, or refuses to, recognize him for what he is; instead, he looks for "scientific" explanations -- to explain away the obvious. Thus, to the modern mind, the witches were mentally sick women; the Jews in Nazi Germany were the victims of a mass psychosis; involuntary mental patients are sick people unaware of their own need for treatment; and so on.
"Among the remedies which it has pleased the Almighty God to give to man to relieve his sufferings, none is so universal and so efficacious as opium"
What God has given, the Therapeutic State has taken away.
Authority versus autonomy
Formerly, opium was a panacea; now it is the cause and symptom of countless maladies, medical and social, the world over. Formerly masturbation was the cause and symptom of mental illness; now it is the cure for social inhibition and the practice ground for training in heterosexual athleticism.
Our right to drugs
Authorities can go far in maintaining the illusion that (ab)using a drug is a disease, but an illusion it remains.
Addiction is a choice
'Addiction' is a fine old English word meaning commitment, dedication, devotion, inclination, bent, or attachment.
Contrary to the shrill, mindless propaganda of the 'war on drugs', very few of the people who use alcohol, marijuana, heroin, or cocaine will ever become 'addicted', and of those who do become heavy drug users, most will mature out of it in time, without treatment.
