Какое-то дурацкое гоненье, не имеющее отнощения к действительности. Ощущение, что человек вообще понятия не имеет о тех вещах, о которых говорит. Но тем не менее вещает с важным видом.

By reading the comments I got the impression that the author (if pressed hard enough) will abandon all claims and say only that it is useful for mathematicians and for scientists to understand the possible applications of abstract mathematical constructions.

Even this claim is doubtful. It is a mystery that mathematicians are able to come up with any abstract constructions at all. So it's far from clear which directions are going to be useful for applications in the future. In order to have such applications tomorrow, it seems that we today need to forget about applications and think only in terms of mathematical beauty and internal logic of the mathematical constructions. Otherwise, it seems, the human brain cannot proceed in the right direction.

У меня такого впечатления не сложилось.
"У меня гипотеза, что правильный математик -- это не "чистый", а просто занимающийся каким-нибудь делом человек, который кроме всего прочего умеет еще и математикой заниматься"
