The great dividing line in American politics today is between:
1. People who believe they are smarter than you and therefore should be able to tell you how to live your life because you are incapable of doing it for yourself.
-and-
2. People who want to be left the hell alone and believe that everyone should be responsible for themselves and face the logical consequences (both good and bad) of their life choices.

Exactly.
And you know what? I also have such people, not in American politics but in my extended family, who believe that they are smarter then me and therefore should be able to tell me how to live my life. In the literal sense of the word "tell", some of them even are still able to tell me that, from time to time; and as a matter of freedom of speech will retain the ability of telling me all that crap, until I finally, eventually, close the line of communication off.
Well, I have my reasons to still keep the line of communication somewhat open for a while, for another little while. But do I follow those people's suggestions? Of course not. And if they try to insist? Well, there have been a couple of such attempts, in some cases. In such cases, the line of communication ceases to exist.
