Цитата из книги Sex, Science and Profits известного Terence Kealey (являющегося также автором The Economic Laws of Scientific Research), из параграфа The Iron Age Invents Science:
"Barter cannot serve a brisk market. The simplest markets, those of Stone Age times, could manage by barter, but once business has become brisk, barter is limited by convertibility, or rather its lack. Barter allows trader to swap a pig for, say, twenty ducks, or three banana trees for half a deerskin, but if one pig is worth twenty ducks, and if six ducks are worth one banana tree, and if three banana trees are worth half a deerskin, then how many ducks does a trader get for a deerskin, and how many pigs for a banana tree?
The more goods that are bartered, the more exchange rates are therefore needed. Swapping three goods demands only three exchange rates, but ten goods require fourty-five rates, and one hundred require 4,950. The formula for the number of combinations is, of course, C^n_r = n!/[(n-r)!r!] where n is the number of commodities and r = bilateral pairs. Since the number of exchange rates grows exponentially, a common currency is required within even modest markets."
Экономический аргумент никуда не годится (в мире, где существуют какие-то независимые от места и времени обменные пропорции между товарами, кому и зачем понадобится хранить таблицу попарных соотношений? Когда достаточно помнить пропорции всех товаров к одному фиксированному, который фиксированный товар может быть при этом своим для каждого торговца, а даже если он у них одинаковый, то использование его для хранения информации о пропорциях не подразумевает готовности принимать его в обмен). К тому же человек не понимает смысла общеизвестной математической формулы, которую совершенно не по делу выписывает (чему-чему равно r? и что там экспоненциально растет?).
