The author tries to summarize his work on contramodules in this paper. The original work occupies several books and articles, and thus a summary of it could be a good idea. However, the paper in question itself is 82 pages long, and thus reading it constitutes a pretty challenging task. Moreover, parts of the paper are very specialized, aiming at distinct audiences, and thus are hard to follow for the rest of the readership.
The idea of contramodules goes back in time (dating to the 1960’s), but was forgotten since. The author brings it back with a vengeance: he invented new related concepts, such as semicontramodules, coderived categories, contraderived categories, and so on, that together form a very complicated mesh of mathematical concepts (that is hard to grasp, at least after only one reading). He shows how these ideas occur in disparate areas of mathematics, from algebraic geometry, through representations of Lie algebras, to topological groups. The author demonstrates a wide ranging understanding of these many areas of mathematics.
Nonetheless, I am not sure how deep and important these various new concepts really are. There is the possibility that in the future, the author’s innovations will be considered to be central and of high value – but such a prediction is beyond my ability. Furthermore, some of the ideas presented in this paper seem to be a rephrasing of ideas by previous authors, with a new interpretation, but with no visible important new content.
I find it hard to produce a definitive recommendation regarding publication. I understand that this journal aims to publish survey articles, and this is indeed such an article. The paper could be published as is, but the impact it would have is doubtful, because of the aforementioned reservations. Another option is that the author and the editors would consider publishing a shorter version of the paper, in which the essential ideas are distilled, but the excess information will be eliminated. A third option is to break the paper into pieces, each addressing one area of application.
Это двенадцатый отказ в публикации, который я получаю из редакций международных математических журналов с осени 2009 года. (Он же двенадцатый такой отказ в моей жизни, т.к. до осени 2009 года я некоторым образом не получал отказов из редакций.)
